Ludovico strikes a pose of splendid hauteur, as if conjured from the gilded dreams of Versailles. His astrakhan curls of jet-black tumble like powdered wigs. His chest a froth of lace, soft as cloudlight, yet radiant as a seraph’s plume. Like the Sun King reborn in houndish form, he moves not as a beast, but with the gravity of myth. Less spaniel than sovereign, crowned by nature and kissed by the divine.
The set was staged to conjure the famous portrait of Louis XIV by Hyacinthe Rigaud.
