Secret Pompeii: How a Roman provincial town rewrote the West’s erotic imagination. The excavations in Pompeii shocked and scandalised modern Europe.
Beneath the ash, archaeologists uncovered vivid frescoes, graffiti, statues, and household objects that revealed a far more open and playful attitude to sex than people had imagined.
This lecture uncovers how these finds transformed our ideas about Roman love and desire.

About the Speaker
Alastair Blanshard is the Paul Eliadis Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland, and Director of the Univeristy’s RD Milns Antiquities Museum. He is the author of a number of works on Greek homosexuality and its afterlife.
